This site hosts a number of discussion forums for archivists to share how they use RAD, explore changes to descriptive practice, and converse with other archivists about arrangement and description. Users can also comment on specific sections of RAD through this website, if they prefer.

Purpose

These forums are meant to provide a space for anyone interested in archives in Canada to discuss arrangement and description. This may include sharing challenges with RAD 2008, examples of how they make RAD work for themselves, or ideas to expand archival descriptive more generally. While a thorough revision of RAD is needed — especially to consult with indigenous communities in a mutually beneficial reciprocal manner — these discussions have the potential to improve descriptive praxis for everyone involved. Change doesn’t only happen at the highest levels. We as individuals and a community can choose to take steps and makke changes towards a better descriptive standard that is more representative of all Canadians. And we can do so in a transparent and open manner (like this website) which is available to everyone, regardless of background or how professionalized they may be.
